If you journeyed along BC highways back in the 1950s-1980s period, you'll recognize this guy! Chris said he was terrified of them as a young kid and insists he can't be the only one. It's a Garbage Gobbler and these were part of a campaign aimed at children to keep the province litter free. They could be found at various rest stops and pull outs along many highways. In total there were over a couple hundred made, and a few still exist.
This one sits at the highway's yard in Revelstoke BC. Check the comments for more info and make some NOISE down there. ๐ We read every single comment and respond to select ones within a day or two. _______

The Calgary Stampede Parade on 7th Avenue in 1948 and 76 years later, the 2024 edition is happening today!
This image comes from the Crossley Slides, which we scanned recently and is one of the oldest in the bunch. Thank goodness for Kodachrome, the most stable of all the transparency films and this image is likely just as vivid as when shot. Any others would have colour shifted or faded, minimally.
The buildings in back still exist (did someone say Then & Now?) but have been empty for some time now.
Any one have memories of this parade? Share the memories! Recognize someone? Speak up!

From 2022. We've always admired this historic business block in the Crowsnest Pass and for this photo Chris got up early on a Sunday to capture it. He didn't want any cars out front and has a thing for that soft light of morning. The time stamp says 6:05am.
Interesting story: a while back we were due into the Orpheum Theatre (second from the right) for a historical piece for a magazine. Just before that was to happen, the theatre unexpectedly closed (recall some roof issues) and that's too bad because it was cool inside.

There's no mud like Calgary mud. It's viscous, slicker than Teflon and when dry solid as concrete. Here's a scene showing some new development in the neighbourhood of Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill in 1954 and how it looks today.
70 years apart!
We just love to standing in the same location as the original photographer did long ago. Can't describe it, but it's a thrill.

Original: Calgary Albertan Newspaper Archives at the University of Calgary. The caption reads: "Potholes and mud plague streets in Calgary's new residential areas, due to heavy rains." _______

Four years ago to the day. Here's a view of the Calgary Stampede Grounds on what would have been Sneak-a-Peek night 2020. It's normally the lead-in to the greatest outdoor show on earth and for the first time in almost a century, the week+ long party was cancelled. Thank you Covid.
We came to photograph the Big Four Building for a project and imagine our amazement when the Stampede suggested we come this night. How strange to see the grounds so empty and lifeless. Had we stood here at any other year, there'd be rides, concessions, throngs of people and more cowboys than you could count. On this strange, eerie night, it was all ours.
It's a sad scene, but on a positive note, parking on the grounds was never better.

We're back! For reasons not fully understood, this page was taken down by Facebook a week ago and only just returned. The stated reason was due to a "community standards" strike, but exactly what never fully explained. It's not like there's anything offensive or controversial here, so we're left scratching our heads why we went to Facebook jail. The powers that be act in strange, mysterious ways and we're frankly worried it'll happen again. It makes one feel a little run-down at times but we appreciate the good times that come with this page.
We'll return to posting now and as always our followers are encouraged to like, share and especially comment on posts. We'd love to hear from you and it helps bring on more new content . Make some NOISE!
There is going to be some changes at BIGDoer.com soon and we'll elaborate more once things happen. For one, I think we can dispense with the sign-in and are currently testing new software that should keep out all the troublesome bots, spammers, scrapers and hackers. The bandwidth they steal is the reason the sign-in was installed in the first place. Stay tuned.

- We do this for the pure joy of it. - This site does not make money and in fact is a huge money pit. - We struggle with writing so be kind. - When we chat about history: things were different then and may be in conflict with contemporary views. In other words, the olden days were weird! - If a location is not mentioned, it's by design and done to protect sensitive sites. - There's a lot here, but pace yourself! - Odd, obscure. offbeat and a different take - that's us.
On the menu every day:
