Roam at Night

Low light photography is a skill we struggle with. Oh, we understand the principals and all, but still have a hard time of it. To combat this we’ve been getting out, in town, and practising. We’re not worried about the composition so much, nor the subject matter, but getting the technical aspects down pat and how it applies to post-production. It’s more about did we focus right, did we handle the light right, did we use the proper shutter speed, aperture and ISO, the end game, tackling more complex subjects and conditions later.

Two photos here. The top one shows an old 1970s/1980s era Vanguard Trailer, a real beater, parked in an industrial area of Calgary’s Inglewood Community. Seen in back is the CPR’s Alyth Yards, and some locomotives waiting for the call to work. The sky’s glow is due to overcast conditions and light bounce from downtown.

Next, and just down the road, an early Crossover SUV, some might say the first, a 1980s era AMC Eagle. Ohhh, fake wood side panels – love it! AMC was an also-ran in the US auto industry eventually being taken over by Chrysler (1987). This one appear to be regularly used. If you own it, contact us, we’d love to document it more. Lights from the CPR freight yards paint the sky an odd shade.

More of these posts coming – love sharing how we learn and grow and not the least bit scared to admit there’s something we’re not good at yet – now scroll down and enjoy the pics. Night all…

A random post picked just for you…
Baby Fishbowl – an old junior size transit bus.

Short Subjects: reports that for any number of reasons are brief in nature. They might be updates to older articles, previews of posts planned or not yet published, brief snippets of things that don’t fit in anywhere else or subjects that are so obscure that information on them can’t be found. Or sometimes we just ramble on about Lord knows what.

If you need any more information on what we talked about here, by all means contact us!

Date of adventure: January, 2018.
Location: Calgary, AB.
All shots were from public property.

I’d say practicing is paying off. These photos are nice and sharp with no noise. Can’t wait to see you tackle some auroras. I think you can do it.

    • Thanks for the encouragement. We’ve captured a couple auroras, but it was as much dumb luck as anything. Getting to like this night shooting more but it sure clashes with my medication.

Love the Eagle! My first car was an 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited – with lots of wood grain & vinyl seats. An great car that was fun to drive.

    • Cool! I heard they were pretty good cars over all and quite innovative for the time. Spoke with a fellow out taking a walk and he said the owner drives it regularly.

My parents had an Eagle Wagon in the 80s the only thing I remember was it breaking down often.
