Lefthand’s Cabin
Deep in South Kananaskis Alberta, in a most scenic setting amidst wooded hills and rolling ridges there’s this tiny cabin. A most compact and sturdy dwelling, it was once the base camp for a Stoney Nakoda First Nation’s hunter by the name of Lefthand…John Lefthand we believe. Details are sketchy as to a first name, old records referring to the structure simply as “Lefthand’s Cabin”, but he was known to frequent the area over his ninety some odd years here on earth, so it seems probable it’s him.
Lefthand passed in the late 1990s and was a skilled cowboy and hunter, along with being a regular fixture at the Calgary Stampede Native Village for some eight decades.
The building is no larger than a one car garage. There’s one room, empty now, big enough for a bed, a table plus chair and little else. It’s cozy for sure. It looks out over a low lying area, home to a gurgling creek and many moose (we saw their prints). The building, we’re told, was a seasonal base for hunting parties and such – the valley here is home to many game animals, then as today. We saw evidence of bear, deer, elk and those moose spoken of earlier.
The cabin appears well built and solid. Roof flashing is peeling back and tarps protecting the open windows have torn (the wind blows like crazy here). We’re not sure when it was built but it’s suggested the 1920s (we’ll keep researching). It’s further suggested it was in use into the 1960s or thereabouts. It’s still in good shape overall and I bet even today it could be used as an emergency shelter.

Short Subjects: reports that for any number of reasons are brief in nature. They might be updates to older articles, previews of posts planned or not yet published, brief snippets of things that don’t fit in anywhere else or subjects that are so obscure that information on them can’t be found. Or sometimes we just ramble on about Lord knows what.

Date of adventure: August, 2018.

Please show the cabin respect if you visit.
This is so breath taking nice to see something rustic still standing and can still be used if needed .thank you for sharing . I love seeing items and stories like this reminds me of my father who was an adventure nut he would tell us kids stories of his hunts in the Kananskis area when he would go up there.
It’s a little rough but could in a pinch be used as emergency shelter. What a grand setting there too!
Love this image!
So happy to hear that!
Beautiful pictures …
It’d be hard to take a bad pic here! Thanks!
I knew him (John Lefthand). My Grandfather and he were good friends.
Wow, what a cool connection!
Please let someone do some minor repairs before it’s to late. Beautiful place to have a cabin.
It’s such a lovely valley.
So neat!!
Love old mountain cabins!
Hope someone takes in on and repairs it.
Seems the roof looks pretty new, so perhaps someone is watching over it? Here’s hoping.
Great photos BigDoer! I love seeing it there in mountains.
It’s there, all by itself, lonely and forgotten, but what a special place. I hope Lefthand would appreciate this!
Hope someone fixes the tin on that roof…..
I know. The cabin’s pretty solid and with some help could last a long time.
