Roam at Night
Before anything, a huge thanks goes out the person who helped us with this here post. It’s to thee Coinoath Sarsfeld, low light photographer extraordinaire and super humble fellow, that we raise a toast. After dark of course under a magical night sky and alone at some abandoned farm on the prairies. We’re honoured to be a student given our limited competency in this sub-genre – heck, we identify as hacks. That you invited us along for this shoot tells we have at least some potential, especially knowing how well he guards his tricks of the trade. High five! Here it was a lesson under the stars, more about practicing a technique than the subject itself. And we came away “enlightened”.
The building seen is some old shack beside a highway, rather unassuming but workable for what’s needed. Last used as a granary, it clearly once had a different purpose – a business or maybe a dwelling perhaps. Some people have suggested it’s an old post office from a nearby town that was later moved here. Not sure the source of this info but that’s quite possible I suppose.
And so comes the instruction…this shutter speed, this aperture, this ISO, and not always the ones expected, in perfect union, along with lighting and focusing tips. The concepts we’ve always known for the most part, but were perhaps misunderstood or misapplied. Here, it all came together..with an outdated consumer level camera and kit lens to boot. We toyed with the idea of removing the lights on the horizon in post, but in the end felt it wasn’t necessary. It’s not a spectacular photo so even with them gone it changes little. Our only goal this time was to demonstrate to ourselves what can be done out in the field if we approached it properly. Focus good, clean image and dramatic lighting for the win. Now we can go in more confident next time we channel our inner vampires and “roam at night”. Interior was lit by flashlights.
Hope you enjoy the photo!

Short Subjects: reports that for any number of reasons are brief in nature. They might be updates to older articles, previews of posts planned or not yet published, brief snippets of things that don’t fit in anywhere else or subjects that are so obscure that information on them can’t be found. Or sometimes we just ramble on about Lord knows what.

Do I see a Chris Attrel influence. Did you take his class?
No, Coinoath’s self taught and all we know comes from him.
Good timing with the lighting!
Thank you.
Love the photo. The light adds so much to the run down building.
That’s the icing on the cake.
It looks like there are lights on inside, nice pic.
That lived in look.
Well done.
Thank you Joe!
Perfecto!
Thank you!
Oh wow!!
We learned a lot here.
I love old and deserted buildings, homes etc. They seem to be either
trying to tell their story or want to keep their past a secret. Love all your photos too.
This one holds secrets. So happy you like our work!
Enough light to highlight the exterior wood. Makes one want to know the back story
We might try digging deeper if time permits.
Love the effect from the flashlights but it’s the sky not yet dark out with the stars making their entrance that completes the picture for me. Thanks Chris and Connie.
You are most welcome! It was a fun shoot and we learned a lot.
I know that mundane old shack. Nice perspective.
Thanks!
Very nice
Glad you like the piece!
Today on This Old House.
It’s a fixer-upper!
Great shot!!
How was the interior lit? Synced speed lights?
Thanks, and it was plain old flashlights!
I love this!
Thank you!
Looking forward to seeing what you two come up with!
We have some spectacular places lined up, or are working towards that. Can’t wait!
looks like someone is home!
Knock, knock, any one there?
So jealous! I need to get more experience at night photography
We have some pointers for you and we’ll go out and shoot together applying them.
Sounds like a plan! Thanks 🙂
