Random Didsbury

We make it mandatory to take a break from the road on long trips and if not done our bodies pay for it big time. This stop ‘n’ stretch finds us in Didsbury Alberta and to getting the blood flowing we randomly walk about. There’s plenty of historic buildings, and much character in the community, so this makes the diversion all the more interesting.

On the wrong side of the tracks, it’s a building we suspect is easily 100 years old if not more. We’re not sure what beef the property owner (or who ever did the deed) has with the β€œmuseum”. Do they mean the one in town or something in a deeper a sense? We read some of the scrawlings before giving up and we’re left scratching our heads. β€œThe museum should not mislead the community…” We sent out a couple messages locally but got no answers and these words have since been painted over. And what’s with the two lot reference and what we presume a line dividing the building?

The Didsbury Train Station has been moved away from the tracks a bit and spun around. Built in 1902 (or 1904) it’s called Eldon Foote Hall, after the person who ponied up the funds to pay for restoration and is used by various community groups. That sky!

The K&W Drive-in was closed on our visit and that’s too bad, as they have yummy shakes and other heart-attack fare (we say with fondness). It’s ain’t healthy but tasty so if you loose a few days off your life, consider it a worth-while sacrifice. We found mention of the place in 1970s era phone books, but how ever far back the business dates, it’s pure old school in every way.

A nice little stroll about town and a half hour burned and we Calgary bound again. We love these little town stops and while no stranger to Didsbury, here we got to see it in a way different from other visits. I’m sure we’ll be back too.

Awesome stuff from that same adventure…
Monsters of Metal: Diplomat Mine and Hanna Pioneer Village & Museum.

Short Subjects: reports that are short and sweet in nature. It’s stuff interesting enough in itself, but not deserved of the full on BIGDoer.com treatment. Think silly little snippets, vignettes and likewise things of that sort and you’ll be in and out in no time.

It was a store many many years ago, owned by the Feeg’s family. Everything you could ever imagine needing, narrow pathways through the store, their son continued the business, had items stored in the old bank building at the NE corner (first intersection west of the tracks), the son then took over the Didsbury Creamery – south end of the main street behind the gas station. Feeg’s propane was part of the family business & while the name lives on, I don’t believe there is any family connection left. I believe also the elderly Feeg couple that ran this part of the business lived upstairs.

From what I understand is the old buildings owner is on 2 lots and the town has taxed him for the 2 lots
