Siesta Motel Creston BC

The summer of 2021 found us in the West Kootenays of British Columbia and very soon we’ll show you the awesome adventure we had. Here it’s something quick and simple but there’ll be more…much more. We’re in Creston and this was a chance discovery – how we like it – welcome to the Siesta Motel!

A new home is going up on the property, but the old ghost sign remains down there by the road. Best we can tell, the business operated from perhaps the 1950s to about 2000-ish (based on old phone book entries) and near the end functioned as social housing. Anyone? It appeared to be a small operation with maybe 6-8 units located at the back of the property in one long, single story block. It’s possible that building is still there, had we known to look for it at the time. Stupid us for not swinging around the property but I think a tall fence blocked the view anyway. Thanks to Google Earth’s back in time feature, and streetview for help here.

The new dwelling sits about where the old office/manager’s home was located.

The Siesta Motel is along what appears to be a fairly quiet road, several blocks from the highway and in a residential area. Perhaps traffic patterns were different back when it was built and more cars used to pass by? Overall, it looked to be a pretty no-frills kind of place (no-tell motel?). The sign says RV, but does that mean RV Park? It’s not a big plot of land and old overhead images show no obvious parking pads on the property, so we’re not sure.

We’re old motel obsessed, but you already knew that, so this was worthwhile stop, even if just for the sign. Perhaps it was kept for nostalgia reasons? Comments adding to the story are always welcome.

It became housing for low income families, can’t remember when but it wasn’t a motel in ’97, maybe even sooner. But there was another motel down farther south on the right, I almost think its name was Bluebird, also became low income housing.

    • That’s a fate of many old motels & hotels. Our information came from old phone books, by the way and even if they functioned as long term housing at the end, it seems they were still listed as a motel. Not that anyone was stopping by. Thanks for adding to the story!
