Bamboo Gardens Mayland Heights
Bamboo Gardens Mayland Heights Calgary is a literal hole in the wall restaurant down some back street and secreted away on the upper floor of a nondescript building. Reviews suggest the food is pretty good over all (mmmm, ginger beef) but looking at the exterior may belie the fact. Its seems too out of the way perhaps. That retro signage could once be seen from busy 16th Avenue North, but now blocked from view by new construction.
It’s clearly spelled Bamboo Garden, but other signs on the building, and on the firm’s website includes an “s” in the title, so in plural as Bamboo Gardens. The sign’s in the Chop Suey (or Wonton) font, common to old school Chinese eateries. This lettering gets a bad rap in certain circles, but still widely used. Faded as it is, it’s clearly old and probably dates from the founding of the business in the mid-1970s. Prior to this, the business operated briefly as the Peacock Palace.
The sign just seems out of place in today’s world and it’s that we like. Maybe it’s too old fashioned, or just not with it, but takes us back to a time less complicated. Who doesn’t recall that special night out with the folks for an “exotic” dinner at a restaurant such as this? We like that vibe and just might have to stop by the Bamboo Gardens for a meal sometime.
