Bustling Downtown Argenta British Columbia: well…maybe the word bustling…and downtown for that matter…don’t really apply here, but we’re definitely in Argenta BC, so the title’s at least partly right. Welcome to this little East Kootenay Community, quite remote and off the beaten path and we’re here just because. Look, it’s on the map and we wanted to go. It’s not so much a town, but a widely spaced group of cabins and acreages there in the forest at the north end (east side) of Kootenay Lake.

If you find yourself in Argenta, you’re either lost or crazy, as they used to say. The Post Office is the business centre of the community, when it’s open that is, and not only handles the mail but acts as the local bulletin board. Prepping for a peaceful protest? Read the guide. Need Yoga lessons or homegrown veggies? This is where you’ll make the connection. It’s also the bus stop – yes, they even have transit here, but light rail is still a few years off.

A self serve kiosk, of sorts, offers potted plants for sale. Just deposit the money in an envelope under the…what…tray? There’s the little library too, but that’s no surprise. This place is pure magic, a real back to the land kind of oasis, and it feels like that time we spent a week on Hornby Island out on the coast some years back. There’s a different mindset for sure. BTW, we saw no one, nor heard a sound other than the wind, while doing our thing.

There’s an emergency line to the outside world in behind the PO. Cell service seems sketchy or non-existent at best (at least it was for was) and I suspect not everyone has a land line, so it’s probably a good thing. But no calling friends in Nelson…not even for a minute.
