Meadow Creek BC Billy Clark’s Cabin
Meadow Creek BC: stopping in a small town museum while on a backroad adventure in the remote Lardeau region. It was early May and the place had yet to open for the season, but we could still wander the property to view outside exhibits. That’s a good start and we’re itching to come back when there’s someone around.
Our subject is Billy Clark’s Cabin and it dates back over a century. It formerly stood in a valley a little to east and on the shores of a lake – Duncan Lake – but that site is now underwater. In the 1960s the cabin was relocated to make way for a big man made reservoir in the valley. It’s now it’s a much bigger and deeper Duncan Lake.
The cabin stood elsewhere in the general area for a time before being brought to the museum about a dozen years ago. It’s been fixed up for display and looks much as it did long, long ago. Billy was a hunter, trapper and woodsman and his legacy is of a time when one could live off the land in this way. All he had was this tiny log house, a small plot of land, the surrounding wilderness, and his wits for survival. Nothing more.
It takes certain type of character to thrive in such an out of the way place and we’d be dead in week if given the challenge. There’s towering mountains, vast tracts of forest, few people and it’s no place for city types.
From the same card dump…Trout Lake BC Cemetery, Downtown Viking Alberta (w Harry Palmer) and Jessie’s – Royal Cafe – Golden Crown.
Short Subjects: Reports that are brief in nature. Think silly little snippets, vignettes and things of that sort. You’ll be in and out in no time.
