Sunset in Vulcan Alberta
The scene presented in this post was captured on the road home and the timing attributed to dumb luck. Burning down the highway – hard left into town, hard right along the tracks, and something magic unfolds. There’s the Pioneer grain elevator, there’s a passing train and the sun, a big glowing ball mere moments from dipping below the horizon. This is a sunset in Vulcan Alberta and it all came together here.
The elevator’s a fairly modern structure as they go, but still somewhat similar in design to ones much older. Just bigger. This is the last in town but if one time travelled back only a few decades, you would see many more alongside this one.
Vulcanโs celebrated elevator row once numbered nine and held title as the largest on the prairies. By the time this elevator came on the scene, in the 1980s, it was down to eight. By the early 2000s it stood as the last.
We’re along the Canadian Pacific’s Calgary to Lethbridge secondary line (officially Aldersyde Subdivision) and catching a train along here is not always easy. There’s only a few each way, each day and this makes it all the more special. Thanks Vulcan Alberta for this little diversion โ it was spectacular and soon we’re homeward bound again.
From the same card dump (new tabs)…Slocan British Columbia 81 Years Apart, Nakusp Rail Society and Brown-Lowery Perimeter Loop.
