Gorgeous 1970s GMC Motorhome

It’s no secret we’re vintage RV obsessed. Original or restored, something pulled or driven and no matter the make, we’re interested. Of course, its Bolers and their little fibreglass trailer brethren that seem to occupy our thoughts the most, but anything of the type will do. Here’s a nice GMC Motorhome, found by chance (of course) while wandering one of Calgary’s older neighbourhoods.

These motorhomes were produced by GMC Truck & Coach Division in the years 1973–1978 and almost thirteen thousand were made. It’s estimated something close to two thirds are still out there.

GMC Motorhomes used a front drive set up (similar to an Oldmobile Toronado) and this allowed a low profile. A cutting edge design then, they oddly don’t look all that dated even today. At the time, boxy slab-sided motorhomes, built atop stiff truck chassis were the thing, but here they did otit all different. Sleek, easy handling, smooth riding, integrated, and refined…so totally different from any other. Big windows too.

This colourful one has clearly been done over at some point and looks striking with the snow falling about.

It’s rewards like these that makes these random walk-abouts worthwhile. The date is May 2021 and the location, the community of Inglewood. The westerly section of the community near the railway yards and away from all the gentrification. The raw and gritty side of the community.
