The Little Church
At a crossroads just outside the community of Drumheller, the scenic Red Deer River Valley Badlands a backdrop, stands the “Little Church”. Not much bigger than a children’s playhouse, or some shed you might find in your backyard for storage of gardening tools, there’s room inside for six. Six people who don’t mind cramped quarters that is. Plus the preacher – who unless short in stature will have to stand hunched-over while conducting a sermon or ceremony. Low ceiling alert!
On bumping my head for like the fifth time…“Sweet Jeeeeeeeeees…I mean, ouch, that hurts.” The place is so small even a super-wide lens (16mm) couldn’t take it all in.
Built in the the late 1960s, it’s often said to be the worlds tiniest chapel – even if a quick search on the Internet proves that to be wrong. Perhaps it was at one time, however. Who knows? Interestingly, it seems there’s a lot of miniature churches claiming the title of world’s smallest – two in New York State in particular are most vocal in that regard. One of them does seat two…just sayin’.
A building looking very much like the Little Church can be seen in the 1970s Superman Movie (See: Superman 1978 cemetery scenes – then and now). Seems the producers were in the Drumheller area scouting out locations (here: Superman 1978 – Earthquake!) and may have used it for inspiration. The one in the film does look very similar…but then again, so do a lot of small churches. Still, it’s probable.

The fence around it is made of old railway rails and if I remember correctly they are from the 1800’s or near that.
How did I miss that? Next time I’ll have to look closer. Darn old age is catching up withe me…but I won’t go down without a fight.

Looks like a miniature! My family’s home turf. East Coulee museum is a lot of our families artifacts.
Using an ultra-wide made it look even smaller than it is. It’s so tiny! Cool, we toured the East Coulee Museum last year. Nice place!
