From Another Time

The southwest region of Calgary Team BIGDoer calls home dates from the late 1950s/early 1960s, but interspersed among all the ranch style dwellings, along with a few slightly newer Brady-esque multi-level-splits, are some dwellings that predate these neighbourhoods by many decades. When new these houses were out in the country, likely attached to acreages or small farms, but later got swallowed up as the city grew around them. Still, they managed to survive and today look strangely out of place and time. What’s that farm house doing over there?

Two examples, a few blocks apart, along a busy boulevard, date from the 1910s. One’s of wood, L-shaped and traditional in style (built circa 1914), whereas the other is a brick foursquare with a prominent veranda (built circa 1910). Being multi-story they’re quite a bit taller than any of the newer houses that surround them. Each has narrow windows typical of the era and in footprint are rather modest in size. Both front the street closer than any other houses around and trees on these lots are quite a bit taller (so older). And both, as you can see, are well kept.

There’s a number of these houses in our general area and I suppose we’ll try and search them out. Till, then enjoy the photos of these two. Here, we’re in the community of Glenbrook along 37th Street SW.

The last in downtown Calgary…
Eight Houses.

Short Subjects: reports that for any number of reasons are brief in nature. They might be updates to older articles, previews of posts planned or not yet published, brief snippets of things that don’t fit in anywhere else or subjects that are so obscure that information on them can’t be found. Or sometimes we just ramble on about Lord knows what.

If you need any more information on what we talked about here, by all means contact us!

There’s a few houses like that left in the City- not many though. Unfortunately even historical ones aren’t saved😏

    • Yes, so many are lost each year. I suspect these two have a solid future. They’re clearly well cared for and that can only be a good thing.
