King Edward School
King Edward VII reigned over the British Empire for only a brief period, from 1902, on the passing of his mother Queen Victoria, till his own untimely death in 1910. Brief as his tenure was he left his mark on Canada, a fledging country still finding its own way at the time and very much connected to Mother England. Due to his importance, he lent his name to many new buildings across this Dominion. No matter what city you visited it seems there was a “King Eddy” Hotel or King Edward School. Calgary has both and here it’s a quick and just for fun look at the latter, captured one fine spring evening during the first lockdown (and with us bored out of our heads and desperate for something to do). Those skies were awesome and with not a soul about it was strange and magical.
King Edward School dates back to the early 1910s, so finished a little after his death. Sometimes called South Calgary High for the neighbourhood where it’s located, it remained in use as a school in various capacities until about 2000/2001. Afterwards, it was used from time to time for other things, empty for a bit and at a point damaged by fire. Today it’s cSPACE King Edward, a “creative hub” for artists and creators and looks totally out of place surrounded by some modern additions and all those condos. Not that it’s bad, as the building shouldn’t blend in.
King Edward is one of many iconic sandstone schools in the city from that era still standing today.

My Dad started school there around 1911. He had to walk a mile and a half both ways. (As he would say up hill both ways). Both sister Elsie and brother Harold also went to school there
It must have been gruelling going up and over the Rockies twice each day.

Went there for grade 9 in 1952. Our soccer team won the City championship and I received a big crest. Also competed in long jump against other school teams and lost.
