Mine Road Memorial

There we were, hiking in Southern Alberta, in search of history and on rounding a corner eye up something curious. Here’s a most beautiful setting overlooking a forested valley and on this spot two simple crosses mark this mine road memorial. We came to look at some coal mining remains and instead found this (a bear prevented us from reaching our destination as it turned out).

Take some two by fours, a bit of paint and viola, something humble to honour their memory. But that’s all anyone ever needs.

Given the location, it’s safe to assume these people loved the outdoors and maybe this was their favourite haunt. You see, it’s a recreation area now and man, what a view! Perhaps their ashes were scattered here or the crosses might simply be commemorative. The dates seen tell us they were only placed recently, with both parties around seventy at the time of their passing and gone within a year of each other. A couple? That’s a good bet and isn’t it strange how when one passes on, often the other soon follows.

Dead from a broken heart?

Years ago, this road would have been noisy with the passing of coal trucks but now it’s a deteriorated track and domain of the ATV. This is a popular area for four-wheelers, yet we saw no one. A busy weekend might not be so quiet, but today peace and serenity was in the cards.
