Forced Perspective The Calgary Tower

Forced perspective (noun): the use of any of various techniques (as in photography…) to create the optical illusion that objects or people are smaller, larger, closer, or farther away than they really are. Credit: Merriam-Webster Dictionary. It’s often done for humorous effect – maybe you’ve seen those pictures where some person appears to prop up the Leaning Tower of Pisa – and here there’s no exception. Our subject is the city’s most iconic structure, the Calgary Tower, and it’s been lined up with something much closer in a fun way.

The shooting location is Western Canada High (Connie’s Alma mater) and if one positions themselves just so, it will allow the (old heating plant?) smoke stack to appear as though part of the Calgary Tower structure. The two merge into one, and the observation floors of the Tower appears to balance perfectly atop the stack.

The school’s been here since the 1920s and the Calgary Tower, since the 1960s, so this view has been possible for quite some time. Interestingly, we’ve not yet seen a forced perspective photo done from this position*, even though it’s hardly a hidden angle.

We made note of this shot many years back and found it by chance when out for a stroll, but for some reason never captured it until now. Funny how that works. Then we saw the results, which inspired this post, and wonder why we didn’t act sooner. They match up real nice and hopefully you enjoy the image as much as we did capturing it. Incidentally, the stack and Tower are approximately 1.3km apart.

*Not that we spent much time searching one out.
