The old photo was rough-dated using business directories & other photos of downtown where the year was known. What was called Main back then is now 50th Street.
The original hotel burned down in the 1930s & was replaced by the structure seen today. This comparison was captured while shooting an episode of the Beer Parlour Project inside the Viking Hotel & we'll share more on this soon.

The old photo was rough-dated using business directories & other photos of downtown where the year was known. What was called Main back then is now 50th Street.
The original hotel burned down in the 1930s & was replaced by the structure seen today. This comparison was captured while shooting an episode of the Beer Parlour Project inside the Viking Hotel & we'll share more on this soon.

(2012) This barn & the old wagon are gone now. Here's an old photo that has not seen the light of day for over a decade, yet somehow it showed up on the posting list & we're not sure how. But we like it & so here you are. Our photo archives are many terabytes big & we've been at it a long time, so there's thousands of images, maybe more, that no one has seen for years or longer. We lose track of them all the time.
On the plains east of Calgary.

(2013 Calgary) This building was last home to Farmer Jones Carz, but in the 1960s it was a drive-in called Burger Island. Click see moređ
Farmer Jones in Inglewood was legendary and they sold junkers to people with bad credit (or bad sense). Chris' old man was regular customer & I'm sure he put the Farmer's kid through college. This long time (& legendary) Calgary business closed a year before this photo & the building later torn down.
Farmer Jones was known for (among other things & not all are flattering) their quirky ads & signage. "Cash 4 CarzâŠCash fer CarzâŠI hate munny, I luv carzâŠStoopid buyer on duty." You get the picture. Oh, and the stuffed animals & balloons everywhere.
The ad is from the 1970s (when they actually operated a few blocks east). Note the ghost signage on the building in back & they're still visible today.

Then & Now: Brokeback Mountain (2005). This is an early one done way back in 2014 & before we really worried about lining things up well. We're thinking of redoing this one & others from back then. The location here is the Rockyford Alberta rodeo grounds & it appears briefly in scenes from that movie.

(2022) Beattieâs Garage, Stavely Alberta, in business early-1930s to 1950s. Click see more.đ
This station when built was along the main highway but it's now a quiet residential street. The structure has some rustic fieldstone work & it would be quite easy to imagine a couple globe pumps sitting out front. And grandpaâs old International pickup getting a fill.

(2024) down a lonely Saskatchewan backroad. We're looking at Bay Island SD #4362 (1919-1950, southern SK) & it's one of thousands of rural schools that once operated in the province. Not many are left.
There's never been many folks in this area & nearby farms are few & distant. That's always been the case & the legend of the ten mile walk to class may have some validity here. There's no mountain ranges to cross though.
That old stove was all they had for heat & it was likely taxed come a blustery SK winter. Those close to it roasted & students furthest away, likely had to bundle up.
